Waukesha-based Generac Power Systems has purchased a vacant Pewaukee office building for a new operation that will house 300 employees.

Generac, which makes generators and other energy products, purchased a 75,000-square-foot office building at W236 N1402 Busse Road, just north of I-94 and east of Highway J/Pewaukee Road.

It will serve as the company’s new Customer Contact Center, Generac announced.

Generac is investing more than $8 million to purchase and renovate the building, with employees to begin working there in August.

It will house sales and support groups, as well as portions of the company’s marketing team.

The company has outgrown its headquarters at S45 W29290 Highway 59, said Aaron Jagdfeld, president and chief executive officer.

“Generac has experienced tremendous growth over the past decade as the combination of an aging grid and extreme weather are resulting in more frequent and longer lasting power outages,” Jagdfeld said, in a statement.

That growth “has only intensified over the last 18 months with more people needing backup power at home where they’re doing everything from working to learning to shopping,” he said.

“Expanding to this new location will allow us to continue to grow Generac to serve our customers, partners and our people, as we work to meet the incredible market demand,” Jagdfeld said.

The company’s other recent expansions include the acquisition of Chilicon Power, a California-based solar technology company.

Generac’s Waukesha headquarters will remain its primary location for corporate operations as well as research and development activities.

The Pewaukee building was last used by American Family Insurance Co. prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and that company’s switch to working remotely.

American Family in December 2019 announced it would move those Pewaukee operations to a redeveloped historic building in downtown Milwaukee at 1311-1325 N. King Drive. Those plans have been paused during the pandemic.
