App helps veggie gardeners donate surplus
Too many zucchini in the garden? You don’t just have to leave them on a neighbor’s doorstep and run. Milwaukee is among the places around the country where a mobile app connects home and community gardeners with local hunger relief efforts.
Fresh Food Connect, the organization that launched the mobile app in 2020, this year enlisted Groundwork Milwaukee as one of 50 nonprofits around the country to take part in the app..
The Fresh Food Connect app coordinates donations, getting gardeners’ bounty to local nonprofit groups that tackle food insecurity. Gardeners who download the app can sign up and arrange to have their extra produce picked up from their homes or community gardens by Groundwork Milwaukee, which gets it to groups that provide free groceries.
The organization picks up in these ZIP codes: 53211, 53212, 53207 and 53208. (The app is based on ZIP codes.) Groups interested in becoming operators in other ZIP codes can contact Laura Lavid at laura@freshfoodconnect.org.
The app is available through the Apple App Store or Google Play. More about
the organizations is at freshfoodconnect.org and groundworkmke.org.
