COVID-19 cases keep rising, but Wisconsin sees a small uptick in vaccine doses given

- Sophie Carson

Both Wisconsin’s seven-day COVID-19 case average and the number of people hospitalized with the virus have risen to levels last seen in January.

Meanwhile, average daily doses of the COVID-19 vaccine are slowly trending upward, according to data from the state Department of Health Services.

On Monday the seven-day average for doses of vaccine administered in the state was just under 10,000. Two weeks ago, it was just under 8,000.

It’s an uptick from early July, when vaccine numbers were in a lull and hovered around an average of 5,000 to 6,000 daily doses.

The increase is minimal compared with the scale of vaccinations in the spring. At its peak in April, an average of 65,000 daily doses of vaccine were being administered in Wisconsin.

Gov. Tony Evers has announced a program that will give $100 Visa gift cards to anyone in the state who gets their first shot of a vaccine from a Wisconsin provider between Aug. 20 and Sept. 6.

The seven-day case average, meanwhile, continues to climb. The average recorded Monday of 1,692 was on par with levels last seen Jan. 21 – before the majority of vaccines were given.

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Wisconsin is also the highest since mid-January, with 911 patients. The state has seen a steep, rapid rise in hospitalizations. On July 4, there were just 76 patients with COVID-19 in Wisconsin hospitals.
