State data: 944 virus patients in hospitals

The Wisconsin Hospital Associatio­n reported 944 COVID-19 patients in hospitals Wednesday, up 677 patients from a month ago.

The WHA reported 280 of those patients are in intensive care.

The state reported eight new deaths from Tuesday, with a seven-day average of six, up five deaths from a month ago.

Ahead of Labor Day weekend, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services encouraged Wisconsini­tes in a Wednesday afternoon news conference to celebrate safely and continue taking steps to protect themselves and others against COVID-19. Thousands will be gathered on Milwaukee’s lakefront this weekend as Summerfest returns for the first time in more than two years. The music festival is requiring vaccinatio­ns or a negative COVID test for entry.

Saturday also brings the return of football and fans to Camp Randall Stadium in Madison as the Badgers host Penn State. Fans must wear masks in the indoor areas of the stadium and masks are encouraged in the outdoor areas. Vaccinatio­ns are not required.
