Grocery stores sell baked goods honoring actress Betty White

It doesn’t get much sweeter than beloved “Golden Girl” Betty White. And two Kenosha grocery stores have found a pretty sweet way to honor her.

White died Friday, just a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday.

“Everybody was really rooting her on, knowing she was going to have this 100th birthday,” said Brenda Lois, store manager of the Stinebrink’s Piggly Wiggly at 2801 14th Place. “Everybody is pretty bummed that this happened. I think it touches everybody in a certain way.”

On Sunday night, Lois reached out to the store’s bakery manager to figure out something special to do to pay homage to the legendary actress.

Both Lois’ location and the Piggly Wiggly at 7600 Pershing Blvd. are selling doughnuts, cupcakes and cookies that feature a variety of White-inspired designs, including a caricature of her, with blue eyes, red lips and short, curly hair.

Some have sayings, like “Thank you for being a friend” after “The Golden Girls” theme song; “The older you get, the better you get, unless you’re a banana,” a line White said as her “Golden Girls” character Rose; “Stay Golden”; and “What the world needs now is a St. Olaf story.” St. Olaf is the fictional town Rose was from.

“We saw people taking pictures of it. Whether they bought it or not, it just kind of gave everybody a smile,” Lois said. “We all kind of need that right now given everything that’s going on.”

The products range from 89 cents for a doughnut to around $7.99 for a 12-pack of cupcakes, according to Lois.

These bakery items will be carried through Saturday, Lois said. Both of the stores are open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
