COVID-19 case numbers continue to break records

COVID-19 case counts reached record highs again Friday as the omicron variant continues to surge across the state, according to state Department of Health Services data.

The one-day case count increased to a record high of 12,293 cases, while the seven-day average increased to 7,637 cases — more than double the amount of cases just a month ago.

According to Wisconsin Hospital Associatio­n data, 2,109 people are hospitaliz­ed with COVID-19 — the highest number of people admitted since November 2020.

The state did not release vaccinatio­n numbers Friday. The numbers below reflect Thursday’s totals.

Variant case sequencing

State and private labs regularly do further tests on a portion of positive COVID-19 samples to find the prevalence of different variants of the virus. The numbers below are just a fraction of the total number of variant cases.

Delta variant was identified in 17.33% of tests sequenced during week starting Dec. 27.

Omicron variant was identified in 82.67% of tests sequenced during week starting Dec. 27.
