State reports record high one-day case count

The state Department of Health Services reported the highest one-day COVID-19 case count ever Thursday, as the omicron variant continues to surge throughout the state.

The total number of patients hospitaliz­ed with COVID-19 slightly declined from Wednesday's record high, according to the Wisconsin Hospital Associatio­n, which reported 479 patients in intensive care.

Menominee County continues to record the highest number of cases per 100,000 residents in the state. Milwaukee County records the second-highest total.

State and private labs regularly do further tests on a portion of positive COVID-19 samples to find the prevalence of different variants of the virus. The numbers below are just a fraction of the total number of variant cases.

Delta variant was identified in 17.3% of tests sequenced during the week starting Dec. 27.

Omicron variant was identified in 82.7% of tests sequenced during the week starting Dec. 27.
