Suspect in homicide of UW-Whitewater grad arrested
Ismael Moreno, the second suspect charged in the homicide of Purcell Pearson, has been arrested in San Diego, Milwaukee police confirmed Wednesday.
Pearson, 22, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater who was a popular student leader on campus, was killed in February 2021 during an attempted robbery of designer eyeglasses he had been selling to customers he found online.
Moreno, now 18, was soon after charged with first-degree reckless homicide, party to a crime, but eluded arrest for more than a year.
The other man charged in the incident, Tyrell D. Joseph, 18, was arrested in July and pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree reckless homicide, party to a crime, in January. He received a nine-year prison sentence in March.
Moreno faces a maximum of 60 years in prison if convicted.
2 killed in wrong-way crash on I-43
Two people died early Wednesday and the freeway shut down for hours following a wrong-way collision along southbound Interstate 43 near Chase Avenue.
The victims are a 27-year-old woman and 19-year-old man, each the lone occupant of their vehicles, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.
The collision happened around 1:45 a.m., according to a bulletin from the state Department of Transportation.
I-43 was shutdown for several hours, snarling the morning commute. The freeway reopened around 7:21 a.m., the Department of Transportation said.
Police exchange gunfire with person who fled on foot
Milwaukee police exchanged gunfire with an individual who escaped arrest Tuesday.
Police said officers responded to a report of a person with a gun at 8:21 p.m. in the 3000 block of North 24th Place, in the Amani neighborhood on Milwaukee's north side.
Officers encountered an armed individual, who fled on foot, police said. At one point, the suspect turned and discharged a firearm at officers, who returned fire.
The individual, who is known to police, escaped arrest, and it is unclear if the person was injured in the shootings. No officers were injured.
