Off-duty Cleveland officer shot teen during attempted robbery, police say

Milwaukee police say an off-duty Cleveland police officer fatally shot a 17-year-old boy in self-defense during an attempted armed robbery.

The boy was one of four teens shot in separate incidents Sunday. The other three, ages 13, 16 and 19, are expected to survive.

Milwaukee police say the Cleveland officer, 38, shot the 17-year-old boy about 12:15 a.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of North 17th Street, in the King Park neighborho­od.

The teen died at the scene. Police said he had a gun.

Investigat­ors determined the Cleveland officer “fired in self-defense” during the attempted robbery, Milwaukee police said in a news release Monday. They released no additional informatio­n on the circumstan­ces of the shooting.

Police are looking for two people they believe were also involved in the attempted robbery.

Three teens were shot in separate incidents later Sunday.

A 13-year-old boy was shot inside a residence about 12:15 p.m. in the 4200 block of North 13th Street.

About an hour later, a 19-year-old man inside his vehicle was shot in the 4400 block of West Locust Street.

Then, a 16-year-old boy was struck just after 8 p.m. in the 3000 block of North Richards Street in the Harambee neighborho­od.

In all three shootings, police said the circumstan­ces were under investigat­ion and they did not have anyone in custody.

Milwaukee continues to grapple with gun violence across the city. Milwaukee has recorded 82 homicides this year. That’s compared to 52 as of the same date in 2021, when the city broke its homicide record for the second straight year.
