Charges filed against fourth alleged shooter in downtown mass shooting
Prosecutors have filed charges against a fourth person who police say fired a gun in the May 13 downtown mass shooting that injured more than a dozen people.
Alexus A. Jackson-Milton, 20, of Milwaukee was charged Monday with conspiracy to commit aggravated battery and 15 counts of first-degree reckless injury, party to a crime.
The charges come as prosecutors filed additional and identical charges against her three co-defendants, who were initially charged five days after the shooting unfolded near East Juneau Avenue and North Water Street following a Milwaukee Bucks playoff game.
Those defendants, Lemont R. Siller, 21; Christopher L. Murry, 23; and Marquise L. Jackson, 24, had originally been charged with seven counts of first-degree reckless injury and the additional conspiracy charge.
It’s unclear exactly how many suspects police have identified in connection with the mass shooting, but court records indicate at least five other, unknown people also opened fire.
Using surveillance camera footage, the criminal complaints filed against the defendants describe an apparent coordinated attack against an unidentified 20-year-old man, who Siller later told police he has a longstanding feud with.
Days after the shooting, Chief Jeffrey Norman said police were not aware of any gang affiliations with anyone involved. Court records have not indicated any either.
The complaints describe two groups of people converging on the man and opening fire, with hundreds of people nearby following the Bucks game. At least 10 police officers, who were already investigating a prior shooting in the area, were also close by and reported dozens of shots fired.
In all, police said 17 people were injured in the incident, although criminal complaints have listed 16 victims. Two other shootings in the downtown area reported earlier that night injured four others.
Police were able to identify Jackson-Milton based on surveillance camera footage and a description given by the targeted 20-year-old man, who was shot in the upper right arm, according to the criminal complaint.
Jackson-Milton was walking east along East Juneau Avenue with Siller and four unidentified people after various members of that group had spent a certain amount of time looking at the 20-year-old, the complaint said.
The targeted man was standing in the street with two unknown individuals in front of Grohmann Tower, 233 E. Juneau Ave. while Murry and another group walked west from North Market Street. The complaints said surveillance footage shows members of the group “(taking) up positions around” the 20-year-old.
The complaint filed Monday alleges that Jackson-Milton was the first to approach the 20-year-old by pulling out a gun while facing him.
That prompted another person, who was with the 20-year-old, to pull out a handgun and start firing. The complaint said Jackson-Milton, Siller, Murry, Jackson and four others then fired shots toward the 20-year-old, with hundreds of bystanders nearby.
Three other men who were injured on May 13 have also been charged with gun possession offenses. But they have not been accused in court filings of firing their weapons or associating with the groups of people who allegedly targeted the 20-year-old man.
All seven remain in custody in the Milwaukee County Jail. Siller, Jackson and Murry have pleaded not guilty and a jury trial is scheduled for Aug. 22.
Siller’s cash bail remains set at its original $1 million, while cash bail for Jackson and Murry was lowered from that amount to $100,000 on June 13.
Jackson-Milton’s cash bail has been set at $150,000.
