Resources available for those facing homelessness in Milwaukee

- Jessica Rodriguez

Nearly four dozen tents at one point dotted the landscape in MacArthur Square, near Milwaukee’s courthouse. Recent efforts to connect those living in them with indoor warming facilities whittled that number to four the end of 2022.

Resources are available for those who need help.

Milwaukee’s homeless population has been between 800 to 900 people for a few years, according to Eric CollinsDyke,

a spokesperson for the Supportive Housing and Homeless Services in the Milwaukee County Housing Division.

There has been an increase in unsheltered homelessness in the last 10 to 12 months, Collins-Dyke wrote in an email.

The Milwaukee County Division is pushing to increase resources for additional housing navigation, as well as partnerships with local landlords to work with programs.

If you are at the risk of experiencing homelessness, here are a few resources that can help:

211 hotline

The social services 211 hotline is the best way to get help in Milwaukee if someone is experiencing homelessness.

The hotline is similar to dialing 9-1-1 and Milwaukee area residents can call any time at no charge. Operators can connect callers to social services, including help with housing.

On a land line, dial 211.

On a cellphone, dial 414-773-0211. On a pay phone, dial 1-866-2113380.

Street Angels Milwaukee

Street Angels is a local nonprofit dedicated to helping people without a home in the greater Milwaukee area with housing. In late December, Street Angels, along with Milwaukee Continuum of Care, helped coordinate an effort to provide a location for those staying in MacArthur Square.

Repairs of the Breach

Repairs of the Breach is a refuge and resource nonprofit center for homeless adults open 6 days per week.
