Area wrestlers earn trip to state tournament

The 2023 WIAA boys and girls individual wrestling sectionals took place across the state Saturday.

Here's a recap of the wrestlers who qualified for state tournament­s in Madison this week as sectional winners. (Find a list of Milwaukee-area wrestlers who will make the trip to the Kohl Center as a state qualifier on 7B).

Division 1 Homestead sectional

Arrowhead and Germantown continued their postseason success off the back of their instant-classic duel this past Tuesday night in team sectional action. Both programs crowned four sectional champions Saturday.

Collin McDowell (126 pounds), Connor Crumer (132), Wyatt DuChateau (145) and Bucknell commit Noah Mulvaney bounced back from his left leg injury on Tuesday to win the sectional title at 182 pounds for Arrowhead.

Germantown got titles from Owen Becker (106), Riese Thornberry (138), Talan Schutte (152) and Ethan Riddle (170).

Brown Deer co-op's Maximus Hay won the 113-pound title, Oconomowoc's Kellen Wolbert continued his unbeaten freshman campaign with a title at 120 pounds, Homestead junior Charlie Millard took the 160-pound crown, Port Washington freshman Garret Kawczynski won the 220pound title and Nicolet's Evan Held won the title at 285 pounds.

On the girls side, Sussex Hamilton's Kaitlin Hackbarth (114), Whitefish Bay coop's Rosemary Triggs (126), Germantown's Maev Michalak (152) and Arrowhead's Kate Riege (235) all won their respective weight classes.

Pewaukee sectional

The host Pirates took three titles with Henry Gaschler winning the 106-pound title, Jacob Bruner winning at 145 and Caleb Cady at 152.

Waukesha West also crowned champions at 138 pounds with Xavier Guerrero, 160 with Xander Kuokkanen and at 195 with Nelson Luecke. Waukesha South also crowned a pair of champions with Jimmy Wollenberg winning the 126pound title and Robert Savelkoul the 220pound championsh­ip.

Brookfield East and Wisconsin Lutheran joined the two Waukesha programs with multiple sectional champions. Aiden Crawley (132) and Johnny Botsch (182) won titles for the Spartans, while Coen Henn (120) and Jordan Jackson (285) captured championsh­ips for the the Vikings.

At 113 pounds, Wauwatosa East/West's Nathan Melke won the title and Brookfield Central's Benjamin Otto won the title at 170 pounds.

For the girls, Waukesha West's Elliot Mulloy (107), Brookfield East's Lily Becker (114), Kettle Moraine's Charis Guerra (126) and Waukesha South's Adrianna Beckley (132) all finished atop their respective classes.

Wisconsin Lutheran's Olivia Ramirez (120), Leah Lawrence (138) and Izabella Riebe (235) all qualified for state atop their classes, while Milwaukee King's Terryn McBride (152) and Nimsi Alavez (165) both won titles.

South Milwaukee sectional

The South Milwaukee sectional was the Muskego and New Berlin co-op show, as the two programs combined for nine titles Saturday.

Thomas Mattsen (106), Cael Zelinski (113), Matt Kinzel (182) and Adam Dzievit (220) all won titles for Muskego, while New Berlin's co-op won five titles, including four straight from 145 to 170 pounds. Ryan Gillis (120), Zach Clark (145), Nick Foster (152), Jack Gillis (160) and Jacob Van Duser (170) all won a title for West/ Eisenhower.

Franklin also had multiple champions with Davis Anderson taking the 132pound title, while Talan Summers captured the 285-pound championsh­ip. Whitnall/Greendale's Noah Koss took the 126-pound title, South Milwaukee's Connor O'Donnell took the 138-pound crown and Oak Creek's Hunter Jibben continued his stellar season with a title at 195 pounds.

On the girls side, New Berlin co-op's Camila Garay (100), Amelia Poplawski (132) and Natalia Poplawski (138) won titles. Milwaukee Reagan's Aliana Rauter (107), Tahonesty Donnell (126) and Natalie Maceau (145) did the same in their classes. Whitnall/Greendale's Diana Khaddour (114) and Faith Pritzlaff (235) both took home titles. Muskego's Killian Kiernan (165) and Kahlyn Gieger (185) each won a title. Racine Case's Celine Haschker (120) and Oak Creek's Isabelle Olesen (152) also won their class titles.

Burlington sectional

Badger and Mukwonago were the lone area teams that crowned multiple sectional champions at Burlington on Saturday. Logan Clausen won the 106-pound title and Santino Butitta took the 170pound championsh­ip for Badger, while Brian Whipple (113) and Grant Stromberg (285) won titles for Mukwonago.

Sullivan Ramos won the 138-pound title for Kenosha Indian Trail, Wilmot Union's Joel Sullivan was crowned champion at 152 pounds, Travis Moore captured the 182-pound crown for Union Grove and Thomas Reilly won the title at 195 pounds for Kenosha Bradford/Reuther.

For the girls, Mukwonago had four sectional champions in Cailyn Whittier (107), Josephine Stachowski (120), Samantha Wiebelhaus (132) and Ella Schueler (138). Badger's Carley Ceshker (126), Cameran Jansen (145) and Ella Creighton (185) all won titles, while Kenosha Indian Trail's Crystal Gutierrez won the 100-pound title.

Division 2 Wisconsin Dells, Evansville sectionals

Kewaskum's Braeden Scoles continued his undefeated senior season at 49-0 by taking the 160-pound title on Saturday. Scholes was the lone champion in the Dells sectionals for the boys and girls, while East Troy's Brady Collins (106), Delavan-Darien's Christophe­r Karbash (126) and Martin Luther's L'Shawn Taylor (160) all took home titles in the boys Evansville sectionals.

On the girls side at Evansville, Grafton's Audrey Hanson (100) and Ellie Federl (107) took the crowns, while Martin Luther's Aaliyah Diaz (120), Natalie Gratschmay­r (185) and Jana Kopak (235) all finished atop the podium. Pius XI's Sophia de Moya (132) also took home a title.

Division 3 Dodgeland sectional

Kenosha Christian Life's Drew Dolphin (106) and Kenosha St. Joseph's Co'Ji Campbell (120) each qualified for state as sectional champions on the boys side to each stay undefeated on the season, while Ozaukee's Mya Delleree won the 114pound title on the girls side.
