UW’s Williams nets honors

- Mark Stewart

Serah Williams added another double-double to her résumé Tuesday.

The 6-foot-4 sophomore forward for the Wisconsin women’s basketball team enters the postseason tied for the Big Ten record with 15 straight doubledoubles in scoring and rebounding, but her latest double-double is her most impressive yet.

The Brooklyn, New York, native was named firstteam all-Big Ten by the coaches and media, as well as the media’s defensive player of the year.

The honors put Williams in exclusive company at Wisconsin. Just 10 other players in program history were first-team all-conference selections. The last, Michala Johnson, came in 2014. Tamara Moore (2001) is the only other Badger named defensive player of the year. Williams averages 18.1 points, 11.3 rebounds and 2.84 blocks per game. Her scoring average of 19.1 points ranked third in Big Ten play while her rebounding average (12.5) and blocks average (2.7) were first.

The all-conference teams were released one day before the start of the Big Ten tournament, which will be held at the Target Center in Minneapolis. The Badgers (13-15) are seeded 10th and have a Day 1 bye. They’ll play sixth-seeded Penn State at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Iowa’s Caitlin Clarkwas named the player of the year for the third straight season.

In addition to Williams, UW’s Ronnie Porter received honorable mention from the media.
