Milwaukee expected to see thunderstorm overnight Tuesday

- David Clarey

Milwaukee could see over an inch of rain as thunderstorms are forecast to move through the Midwest Tuesday into Wednesday.

The storms are expected to bring about an inch of rain or more and the potential for hail and high wind gusts, according to the National Weather Service.

The most likely severe weather is forecast for Tuesday evening and into the overnight hours, with more severe conditions expected in central and southwestern Wisconsin.

Wind gusts could reach as high as 35 miles per hour and rainfall between 0.75 inches and 1 inch, on Tuesday night, according to NWS forecasts.

On Wednesday, winds are expected to be around 15 miles per hour, with rain between 0.25 and 0.5 inch.

“We’re expecting a system to come across the Plains. It’s going to bring severe weather pretty much from South Dakota to northern Texas,” said Kevin Wagner, a meteorologist at the local NWS. “We’re going to be on the northeast side of things, especially areas near Madison and southwest Wisconsin.”

The storm system developed from the front range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and, with the addition of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, it is creating the likelihood of thunderstorms, he said.

The system’s conditions also bring the potential for tornadoes to form in Wisconsin.

However, that’s more likely in areas like Iowa and Missouri, which are expected to receive more severe weather than Wisconsin, Wagner said. Madison and southwest Wisconsin will see higher chances for severe weather as well, depending on the storm’s movement, he said.

A Monday morning report from the La Crosse office of the NWS said that “Questions remain how far north the severe weather will extend over northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin.”

That office, which covers southwestern Wisconsin, forecast winds between 20 and 35 mph on Tuesday, with between 0.5 and 2 inches of rain, and 35 to 45 mph winds, with between 0.5 and 1.5 inches of rain on Wednesday.

Later in the week, Milwaukee is forecast to have chances of scattered showers on Thursday, but it should be relatively dry after Wednesday. Temperatures are forecast to be in the 50s Tuesday, mid-60s Wednesday and back in the 50s on Thursday and Friday.
