The MAM is using 2017 to take a deeper look at one of its foundational collections: the works donated by the city’s original art patron Frederick Layton. Under the microscope this month are some of the most important works by American painter Eastman Johnson, whose antebellum paintings of slavery made him famous among abolitionists.
