Memory Care

Centers offer help, compassion to those with dementia

- BY B.L. HOGAN

These two organizations offer special, customized care to people with memory issues.

JEWISH HOME AND CARE CENTER

The Jewish Home is a national leader in dementia care, providing a continuum of innovative and compassionate care for people challenged with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

The award-winning Helen Bader Center offers a home-like environment with support from our caregiving team. At the heart of the center is Monya’s Garden, a beautiful rooftop oasis where residents and family members can enjoy sunshine and beautiful views of Lake Michigan.

The trained professional staff will consider many factors when considering in which area a prospective resident is most likely to thrive. Since dementia is a progressive disease, the Jewish Home has developed end-stage dementia programming for small groups and one-on-one sensory therapy. The pastoral program provides spiritual support to both the family and the resident.

Daily activities are planned to nurture the creative abilities retained by those with memory loss, while ensuring that residents continue to live joyful, purposeful lives. Interaction, through socialization and programming, enables residents with memory loss to hold on to independence longer, while continuing activities that give their lives pleasure and meaning.

A few of the many vibrant activities:

• Art Therapy to encourage residents’ self-expression and creativity

• Music and Memory, which is a nationally recognized program that provides people with personalized music • Intergenerational visits with area schoolchildren • Garden and planting activities in the beautiful Monya’s Garden.

HERITAGE SENIOR LIVING

Heritage Senior Living has six communities in the Greater Milwaukee area where residents receive special memory care designed to help people meet the challenges of living with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias.

“We’re committed to the highest degree of quality support for our residents,” says Debbie Miller, Heritage marketing director. “Our seniors, especially those living with dementia, deserve lives with dignity, respect, comfort and quality care. From compassionate daily care to life-enrichment programs to the ongoing involvement of our staff and family members, our comprehensive memory care program, Toddy’s Touch Approach to Dementia Care, provides Alzheimer’s and dementia care residents with personal connections and activities that build and maintain cognitive strength.

“Toddy’s Touch Approach to Dementia Care promotes autonomy, independence, and connectiveness,” Miller says. “Our residents are free to stroll in our safe and secure living environments, both indoors and outside, where they can maintain their sense of independence. In line with our five Philosophies of Care – Independence, Individuality, Privacy, Dignity and Choice – our residents also decorate their private suites as they wish.”

The memory care services are one of several options for residents of Heritage Senior Living communities, including independent living, assisted living and enhanced assisted living.

Memory care is available at Heritage communities in Elm Grove, Menomonee Falls, New Berlin, Port Washington, Waukesha and West Allis, with a new one expected to open in March in Hartland.
