Spinning:

Fitness fads come and go, but spinning seems to have more stamina than most.

Put the pedal to the metal at one of the metro area’s cycling studios.

THE NEON-ORANGE

bikes and oversized inspirational quotes dominating Spire’s Water Street studio inspire cheer. But they’re nothing compared to the gym’s instructors, who never run out of words of encouragement (or stamina), and can be heard belting out one-liners like “Show me what you got!” or “Let ’er rip!” while pedaling furiously to the beat of contemporary pop songs, even 40 minutes into a 45-minute class.

Spire is just one of several boutique fitness centers in the Milwaukee area to specialize in spin classes, capitalizing on the enduring popularity of the trend. Most of the studios, Spire included, seem to appeal primarily to young-ish women who already exercise regularly. But their classes are accessible to customers of all ages and abilities, who can choose to dial the resistance on their machines up or down. 102 N. Water St., spire-fitness.com
