RC Airplane Repairs Made Easy

-

Recently, we posted a how-to article showing a workshop fix for an Aeroworks Ultimate Biplane with a busted landing gear. With so many ARFs on the market today, pilots have a lot of flight experience but few have ventured under the covering material. This how-to shows step-by-step how to completely remove the damaged parts and install new ones to bring the busted biplane back to ready-flight status. Here are some of your comments.

Dale Simmons: Nice article and excellent clear pictures; I like that. Not scrimping on the number of pics really made this article easy to follow. Showing the hand and power tools being used brought clarity and precision to the repair article.

Ken Hanawalt: It seems the landing-gear mount is the weak point on most, if not all, ARFs. When are the manufacturers going to learn this? On the other hand, you can’t sell new airplanes if the old ones never break.

Joey: Thank you so much for this article.

I am attempting my own first-ever torn-away-undercarriage repair on two 74-inch-wingspan aerobatic planes. The crashes happened within a week of each other, and this left me no choice, LOL. The photos, tools, and equipment have given me the confidence to have a go at it.

Tom Inderkum: Replacing the eight steel bolts that attach the landing gear with nylon bolts would still allow for a strong attachment that would withstand the occasional hard landing while, at the same time, give you a breakaway point in the event of an unexpected “gravity-induced incident.”
