AT THE FIELD

One of the worst things you can hear when you’re at the field is someone shouting, “Engine out!” All those on the flightline or in the pits stop what they’re doing, looks to the sky, and holds their breath. So when this happens to you, you have not only the fate of your aircraft literally in your hands but also the added pressure of executing a dead-stick landing in front of a rapt audience. That’s why Paul Tradelius’s Flight Technique article, “Conquer Dead-Stick Landings,” should be on your must-read list this month. A former U.S. Navy and commercial airline pilot, Paul is also a longtime RC enthusiast, and his practical advice will help give you the confidence to bring your plane back to the earth safely— or at least with minimal damage.

IN THE WORKSHOP

If, unfortunately, you experience a dead-stick or other “rough” landing, you may find that your model’s landing gear is in need of repair. But here’s a lucky break (see what I did there?): This month, our own Gerry Yarrish shares a step-by-step guide to repairing the bolt-on aluminum landing gear that’s commonplace on many ARFs. Check out his tips, and don’t trash that crash!
