How the honorees were chosen

To select the honorees in Modern Healthcare’s fifth biennial listing of the Top 25 Minority Executives in Healthcare, sponsored by Furst Group, Modern Healthcare issued a call for nominations on Dec. 13, 2013. The nomination deadline was Feb. 5, 2014. Readers submitted nearly 170 nominations.

For this recognition program, Modern Healthcare used the U.S. Census Bureau’s definition of a minority. The agency considers people with the following ethnic backgrounds to be minorities: African-American or black; Alaska Native; American Indian; Asian; Hispanic or Latino; Native Hawaiian; other Pacific Islander; and multiracial.

An editorial review board consisting of the senior editors at Modern Healthcare reviewed the nominations and judged them on the following five criteria. Whether the candidate: successfully served as a leader or managed an organization or company; showed the ability or power to effect change in the healthcare industry; demonstrated a willingness to share expertise with others in the field; served as a role model or mentor to other minority healthcare executives; assumed a leadership position in the industry outside of the candidate’s own organization or company.

The final list appears in this issue in alphabetical order. Per editorial policy, award sponsors are not involved in the nomination or submission process, nor in the judging or determination of recipients. There is no limit on the number of times a person can be nominated or be a recipient of this award.

This year’s recipients will be honored at a gala on Wednesday, July 16, at Chicago’s Knickerbocker Hotel. The evening will include a welcome reception, a formal dinner and an awards presentation. For details and to register, visit modernhealthcare.com / minority.
