Medicaid charges up, self-pay down in expansion states

The Colorado Hospital Associatio­n has produced some of the earliest data on the effect of Medicaid expansion through 30 its study states. of 465 hospitals in It found that in the first quarter of 2014, hospitals in expansion states saw Medicaid charges account for 18.8% of their total revenue, an increase of 3.5 percentage points over the first quarter of 2013. At the same time, self-pay charges fell to 3.1% of the total, down from 4.7%. And the average amount of charity care for each hospital declined to $1.9 million from $2.8 million —a decrease of 32.1%.
