Dr. Jerome Adams, an anesthesio­logist with Eskenazi Health, Indianapol­is, has been appointed commission­er of the Indiana State Department of Health.

Adams, 40, is an assistant professor of clinical anesthesia at Indiana University’s school of medicine and chairman of the pharmacy and therapeuti­cs committee at Eskenazi. He succeeds

Dr. William VanNess. Adams has served as president of the Young Physicians Society of the Indiana State Medical Associatio­n as well as its assistant treasurer. Before working at Eskenazi, he served as a general anesthesio­logist at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Ind., and as a physician rapid responder at Indianapol­is Orthopaedi­c Hospital.
