HOSPITALS AND HEALTH SYSTEMS
Dr. Mitchell Katz, head of Los Angeles County’s health system, will lead a new consolidated agency that encompasses the health system, as well as the county’s public-health and mental-health agencies. He has been the director of the Department of Health Services, which runs the county’s hospitals and clinics, since 2010. Before that, he led the San Francisco Department of Public Health.
Katz, 55, whose appointment was widely expected, was confirmed by the county board of supervisors last month.
The new “superagency” is expected to save the county a significant amount of money, while reducing barriers between county physicians, behavioral-health providers and addiction professionals. But mentalhealth advocates worry that behavioral health will become a lower priority in the consolidated department.
Southfield, Mich.-based Beaumont Carolyn Wilson Health has named as its first COO since the system was formed through a September 2014 merger.
Wilson, 53, will begin her new role on Jan. 18. The eight-hospital system was created through the merger of Beaumont Health System, Botsford Health Care and Oakwood Healthcare, all located in the Detroit area.
She previously served as executive VP and COO of Fairview Health Services, Minneapolis, where she oversaw operations at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, five community hospitals and a number of clinics, senior residences and retail pharmacies. She also served as president of UMMC and co-president of University of Minnesota Health.
John Fox, former CEO of Emory Healthcare in Atlanta, joined the Beaumont system as president and CEO in March, and has since begun to build his executive team.
