Celebrating the 30th class of Up & Comers
THIS YEAR we honor the 30th class for Modern Healthcare’s Up & Comers awards. The program recognizes healthcare’s rising stars— young men and women still in the early phases of their careers but who have already made their marks in the industry, demonstrating their knack for leadership and innovation.
The Up & Comers program is a labor of love for Modern Healthcare. Nothing gives us more joy than sending high-fives to professionals age 40 or under whose intelligence, skills and drive are advancing transformation across the healthcare landscape.
The professionals we have recognized over the years are also evidence that bold leadership permeates our industry and stretches across the healthcare continuum—from multistate health systems and not-for-profit community hospitals to medical device startups and the largest health insurers.
Looking at every year’s class of honorees, we’re also reminded that we need not fret about the future of healthcare. These young leaders continually demonstrate “the right stuff” necessary to confront our latest healthcare challenges—from meaningful use of health IT to population health management, MACRA and mobile health.
As we look back over the years of Up & Comers honorees, it’s amazing to see so many who have who played prominent roles in shaping the industry. Consider just a few of past winners. I’m sure you’ll recognize the names:
Dr. Donald Berwick (1987), president emeritus at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and a former CMS administrator.
Marna Borgstrom (1992), longtime president and CEO of YaleNew Haven (Conn.) Health System.
Dr. Brent James (1988), executive director at the Intermountain Institute for Health Care Delivery Research.
Bobby Jindal (1997), former governor of Louisiana and an early contender in the 2016 race for the Republican presidential nomination.
Nancy Schlichting (1991), who has served as CEO of Henry Ford Health System since 2003 and will be retiring at year-end.
Modern Healthcare is proud of its role in spotlighting young leaders with the insight and savvy to transform the industry. Congratulations to all of our Up & Comers—past and present— who lead the charge for better healthcare delivery.
