Dr. Philip Ozuah

Ozuah has been ex­ec­u­tive vice pres­i­dent and COO of Montefiore Health Sys­tem since 2012. Montefiore is an aca­demic med­i­cal cen­ter that cares pri­mar­ily for low-in­come pa­tients in its hos­pi­tals and clin­ics in the Bronx, which has an es­ti­mated 117,000 un­doc­u­mented res­i­dents. Ozuah was born in Nige­ria, where he ob­tained his med­i­cal de­gree. He got his start at Montefiore and Al­bert Ein­stein Col­lege of Medicine in 1992 as a pe­di­atric in­tern and res­i­dent. Ozuah has writ­ten ex­ten­sively about health prob­lems that dis­pro­por­tion­ately af­fect un­der­served com­mu­ni­ties, such as asthma, obe­sity and en­vi­ron­men­tal ex­po­sures. He is cred­ited with ex­pand­ing ac­cess to health­care in low-in­come com­mu­ni­ties and re­cruit­ing skilled lead­ers dur­ing his ten­ure as physi­cian-in-chief of the Chil­dren’s Hos­pi­tal at Montefiore and chair of the pe­di­atrics depart­ment at Ein­stein.
