Leading the way with creative solutions
It’s become increasingly clear decision-makers in the
healthcare industry must think beyond the clinical context to address the needs of patients and communities. Simply acknowledging differences in health outcomes isn't enough. To see true change, stakeholders have to commit to confronting the multiple, systemic inequalities causing and exacerbating disparities.
This year's Top Diversity Leaders in Healthcare, featured in the following pages, use a variety of strategies to widen access to care and build communities of wellness. Some have fostered partnerships with local groups focused on reducing chronic disease in at-risk patients. Others have used data to pinpoint potential gaps in treatment among vulnerable populations. Still others have invested funds in entities addressing social needs.
Of course, working toward a more equitable health industry also requires focusing on diversity and inclusion at one's own institution. Many of the honorees have facilitated internal councils aimed at promoting understanding of cultures; set goals for hiring and representation; hosted trainings for providers to spot and combat bias; and created resource groups to foster a sense of belonging and respect among staff members.
In addition to the spotlighted individuals, Modern Healthcare has selected nine organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to diversity in their workforces, including at an executive and board level.
Inequality in healthcare requires creative solutions. Modern Healthcare's annual Top Diversity Leaders program recognizes those forging the way.
