Number of COVID-19 cases take a jump
In Monterey County, 51 more people had tested positive for the coronavirus through Thursday night.
SALINAS >> Monterey County reported its second highest singleday increase of COVID-19 cases on Friday, marking a continued upward trend in the number of local cases amid increased testing and relaxed restrictions on business and activity.
According to the county Health Department, 51 more people had tested positive for the coronavirus through Thursday night, boosting the total number of cases to 865 in the county.
An increase of 63 cases was recorded by the county Health Department on June 6, the highest single-day rise.
Since Friday last week, the number of local cases has increased by 145.
The bulk of all cases have been recorded among Salinas residents, who represent 506 of local infections, and south Salinas Valley where 242 cases have been confirmed.
North County has had 60 cases while the Monterey Peninsula and BigSurhavehad57.
In all, 81 people have been hospitalized due to the virus, and 11 people have died with the most recent death on Sunday. A total of 13,616 people have been tested for a 6.35% positivity rate, and 534 people have been confirmed to have recovered.
There have been 3,377 individuals who have been investigated due to contact with a confirmed coronavirus case.
On Thursday, county Health Officer Dr. Edward Moreno issued a revised local shelter-inplace order aligning with the state on additional re-opening of businesses and activities ranging from family entertainment centers such as movie theaters and bowling alleys, and zoos and indoor museums, to wineries, bars, hotels for tourism, fitness centers, campgrounds, and more.
Moreno also on Thursday rescinded a previous order prohibiting short-term lodging for nonessential business.
