Lecture on the economy to be held online
The live discussion, “An Economy on Borrowed Money” will take place on Monday from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
MONTEREY >> The 2020 Leon Panetta Lecture Series, “Decision 2020: A Republic If We Can Keep It,” will present the third installment to sponsors, subscribers and ticket holders using Zoom online video conferencing, featuring guest speakers and moderator Leon Panetta on the topic of the economy.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing restrictions on large public gatherings, the Panetta Institute
for Public Policy has been using web-based technology to bring its programs to the communities it serves.
After a successful second event of the series presented using the online platform for the first time, the remaining forums will be presented in the same format to the audience live from remote locations of the moderator and guest speakers. All tickets issued for the previously listed dates will be honored for the new dates and times. Pre-registration to both
events is required upon receipt of an email invitation sent by the Panetta Institute.
The live discussion, “An Economy on Borrowed Money” will take place on Monday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and feature former White House Director of Economic Policy Todd Buchholz, Bipartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget President Maya MacGuineas, 43rd Treasurer of the United States Rosa Gumataotao Rios and host Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, chairman of the Panetta Institute for Public Policy.
“The nation’s debt is now expected to be as high as our GDP (gross domestic product),” said Panetta. “And the COVID-19 crisis is likely to require additional borrowing in order to provide needed relief. Neither the Republicans nor Democrats appear to have any interest in making the tough decisions necessary to achieve fiscal discipline. Economists warn that the record debt will ultimately result in a major economic crisis for the nation. How long can we continue to borrow and spend? When will rising interest payments on the debt threaten important budget priorities? How long can we ignore this crucial issue that affects our nation’s destiny? I will discuss these and other economic issues
with our panelists.”
Buchholz is a former White House senior economic adviser and bestselling author, as well as a respected voice on economic and fiscal policy, and on financial markets at home and abroad. He is currently teaching at Harvard University and is a frequent guest on ABC, PBS and CBS news shows.
MacGuineas is president of the bipartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. An expert on budget, tax and economic policy, she has worked closely with members of both parties and serves as a trusted resource on Capitol Hill.
Gumataotao Rios was a former U.S. treasurer whose role was to serve as the CEO of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and the United States Mint, including Fort Knox. She was responsible for currency and coin production, 4,000 employees and a $5 billion budget. She is also a former visiting scholar at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University.
