San Jose State to open season against Air Force

Mountain West announced 8-game schedule that has San Jose State playing four home games

- By Elliott Almond

SAN JOSE >> San Jose State’s football team is scheduled to open the 2020 season by playing host to Air Force on Oct. 24 at CEFCU Stadium, the Mountain West Conference announced Thursday.

The Spartans plan to relocate Friday to Humboldt State to prepare for the season because the Spartans have not been cleared by local public health officers to conduct practices on campus. The school moved a step closer to securing Santa Clara County approval with the California department of public health issuing updated COVID-19 guidelines for higher education Thursday.

The new guidelines outline the state requirements involving sports. The recommendations also say individual schools must adhere with policies from local authorities. They also indicated that spectators would not be allowed for schools playing games within the state.

Santa Clara County public health officers have implemented some of the state’s strictest measures involving activities such as sports in an effort to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The Mountain West announced its eight-game football schedule that is subject to approval from state, county and local officials. Kickoff times were not announced.

San Jose State is scheduled to play four home games and four away.

Here is the Spartans’ schedule:

Nov. 14 vs. UNLV

Nov. 21 at Fresno State

Nov. 28 at Boise State
