Two people were arrested in Monterey on Monday and jailed on suspicion of weapons and drug violations, the Monterey Police Department reported.

In the early hours Monday, police responded to the 2000 block of North Fremont Street after a report of an individual acting suspiciously and looking into vehicles, police said.

As officers arrived on scene, one suspect, identified as Robert Otero, 24, of Alviso was standing near a dark-colored vehicle that he had just stepped out of. Police said that when Otero saw the officers, he fled on foot. After a short chase, Otero was detained and ultimately placed under arrest.

The vehicle Otero fled from was reported stolen out of Fresno, police said.

That vehicle was also occupied by Aurora Fernandez, 24, of San Jose. She was also placed under arrest at the scene.

During a search of the stolen vehicle, police said they found property belonging to Otero as well as stolen property from other vehicles that were burglarized in the area. Police also said they discovered a controlled substance packaged for sale, an unregistered loaded 9mm handgun and a high-capacity magazine.

Otero was booked into Monterey County Jail on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, a felon in possession of a firearm, conspiracy, burglary, possession of a high capacity magazine, resisting or delaying a police officer, parole violation, possession of a controlled substance for sale and possession of methamphetamine for sale.

Fernandez was booked into Monterey County Jail for possession of a stolen vehicle, conspiracy, burglary, possession of a high capacity magazine, possession of a controlled substance for sale and possession of methamphetamine for sale.
