Joan Adrienne Collin passed away February 24th in Visalia, CA. She was 79. Joan was born to John Adrian Balch Sammis and Mary Elizabeth Sammis on January 1, 1942 in Monterey, CA. She had the distinctio­n of being the first birth of that year for Monterey Hospital. Joan graduated from Pacific Grove High School and from San Jose State University with a degree in Education. While teaching Joan continued her education and got a Masters Degree in Education. She had three children with her first husband, Gordon Edward Hurd; Michelle Elizabeth Wollam, John Forrest Hurd, and Gordon Kennedy Hurd. In 1998 Joan retired from the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District after 32 years of teaching and married her second husband, Michael Robert Collin. In her retirement she volunteere­d for many years for Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula. After living most of her life on the Monterey Peninsula, she moved to Tracy, CA in 2015. She also lived for a short time in Zimbabwe. She enjoyed traveling, NASCAR, and spending time with family. In addition to her children, Joan is survived by her brother, John Courtney Sammis, her grandchild­ren Amber Nicole Price, Leanne Nicole Songster, Shelby Nicole Hurd, Abigail Marie Wollam, Kayla Nicole Hurd, Eleanor Constance Wollam, Indigo Skye Hurd, and Ruby Maya Hurd, as well as six great grandchild­ren. She is predecease­d by Michael Collin and by her brother William Frederick Sammis. Joan requested that no funeral be held and that well wishers donate to Meals on Wheels, 700 Jewel Ave., Pacific Grove, CA 93950.
