MONTEREY >> Former Ohio Gov. John Kasich and former Missouri U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill will be the featured guests at the second forum of the 2021 Leon Panetta Lecture Series on Monday.
The 24th annual lecture series, “New Leadership in a New Decade: Can America Be Healed?” will present the event via streaming video with the topic: “The Biden Administration and Congress — Can We Finally Govern?”
“I know of no one more qualified to speak authoritatively on the subject of congressional dysfunction and party polarization that John Kasich and Claire McCaskill,” said Institute Chairman Leon Panetta in a press release. “When they served in public office, both demonstrated exemplary ‘profiles in courage’ by working across the aisle and speaking the truth even when it was unpopular with their party or their constituents.”
Panetta said he will ask the two if the fact that the COVID-19 relief bill signed into law by President Joe Biden Thursday was passed without Republican votes bodes ill for the future.
“What issues in the future could be worked on by both parties?” Panetta asked. “Have Democrats and Republicans given up on doing anything about the record debt? What
will it take to make governing good politics?”
Kasich served as Governor of Ohio from 2011 through 2019. Kasich ran for president during the 2016 Republican primary
finishing fourth in the total delegate count. When he served in Congress from 1982 to 2000, he was Chairman of the House Budget Committee. He now runs
the Kasich Co. and serves as a senior commentator for CNN. He is the author of four New York Times bestsellers.
McCaskill was a U.S. senator from 2007-2019 and is the only woman ever elected to the Senate from Missouri. She served as the top-ranking Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee and senior member of the Armed Services Committee. Currently, McCaskill is a political analyst on NBC and MSNBC and a visiting fellow at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics.
Each of the four live lectures are available only to sponsors, subscribers and individual ticket purchasers. After the final program in mid-May, all recorded lectures will be released for viewing on the Panetta Institute website at www.panettainstitute. org.
