Salinas stays undefeated, beats Alisal

Salinas High won its second game of the week, beating Alisal 34-20 Saturday at Alisal.

Jeff Shaffer rushed for 100 yards in 10 carries with two touchdowns to lead the Cowboys. His brother Adam Shaffer completed 7 of 12 passes from 120 yards. Adam Also added 76 yards rushing on three carries with two touchdowns.

Alisal quarterbac­k Benny Chuca passed for 100 yards and rushed for 68.

The Cowboys, 2-0, had won their opener Tuesday against visiting Alvarez in this abbreviate­d spring season. Schools in the Salinas High Unified School District are playing just each other this season because of COVID-19 precaution­s. Salinas will get an exemption to play rival Palma on April 9. The Cowboys next face North Salinas Thursday. Alisal, 1-1, plays Thursday against Rancho San Juan.

Palma’s season got off to a rough start Friday night as the Chieftains traveled to the Central Valley, losing their opener to San Joaquin Memorial 37-14.

Palma QB Luke Rossi completed 7 of 19 passes for 104 yards, a touchdown and an intercepti­on. Joe Cardinale rushed for 96 yards in four carries.

Palma (0-1) visits King City (10) Saturday. King City ended a 14year losing streak to Carmel with a 58-28 road win Saturday.

In other high school football action Saturday, Nate Escalera, Dylan Uto and Andre Wallace all scored two touchdowns in Alvarez’s 52-0 win over Rancho San Juan.
