New Start Recovery Solutions

- By Dorian Karthauser

The upcoming New

Start Recovery Solutions location opening in early January 2022 at 468 Pine Ave, Pacific Grove, CA will mark the public return of a Monterey historic home.

The Queen Anne residence, designed by architect William H. Weeks, was built in 1902 on land that enabled a scenic view of the Monterey Bay. According to Pacific Grove City records, a Cleveland banker named J.J. Osborne acquired the property in 1901. Mr. Osborn, who made it into a show place on the Monterey Peninsula, resided there until the 1930’s.

Architect Weeks generally applied Colonial Revival detailing in his eclectic way to a variety of late Victorian styles in the area. Known for applying Colonial Revival detailing to his late-Victorian designs, Weeks’ paned oval windows on the second story front with their “spiked” decorative devices, top and bottom, are an architectural theme of the period.

The house has changed hands and functions over the years. In the 1950’s it became known as Pine Manor. It first served as apartments, then as a guest house. In 1961, the house was taken over by Beacon House, an addiction recovery center. The Beacon House closed in 2020.

In early 2022, the newly renovated Pacific Grove house will again serve as a safe harbor for those seeking healing and serenity. New Start Recovery Solutions will open at 468 Pine Ave, Pacific Grove, CA and provide treatment for those seeking addiction recovery. The recent renovations have preserved the unique and historic architecture of the house - while modernizing the interior to accommodate expanded treatment programs and services.

COVID-19 seriously impacted individuals in 2021; especially those struggling with addiction and mental health issues. The increased social isolation and stress has had a negative effect on mental health and sobriety. California, particularly Northern California, is experiencing an opioid crisis. According to preliminary data from the CDC – drug overdose deaths in the

U.S. surged nearly 30% in 2020. This is the sharpest annual increase for drug overdose deaths in at least three decades. The surge is thought to be driven by negative mental health effects of the pandemic and increased use of illegal drugs laced with fentanyl.

New Start Recovery Solutions is looking forward to serving the Monterey area.
