Hartnell's Camacho captures state 800 title

WALNUT >> Sofia Camacho earned All-America honors in two events Saturday for Hartnell College, winning the 800 meters and finishing second in the 1,500 at the Community College state track and field championsh­ips at Mount San Antonio College.

The former North Salinas High distance ace ran 2 minutes, 17.32 seconds in the 800, roughly 60 minutes after clocking 4:37.01 in the 1,500 to finish as the runner-up. Camacho compiled 18 points for the Panthers, who finished fourth as a team with 36 points.

Isabella Reimann also earned All-America honors in the hammer throw for the Northern California team champions, unleashing it 154 feet, 4 inches to finish second.

Teammate Isabelle Torres picked up a point in the 10,000-meter run for Hartnell, finishing eighth in 40:25.70, as did Karla Herrera in the 800 (2:23.16).

Isaac Gensel closed a chapter in his career at Hartnell by finishing second in the 1,500, clocking a personal best 3:54.25. The one-time Monterey High standout also finished second last fall at the state cross-country championsh­ips.

Esteban Deniz podiumed for Hartnell in the 10,000, finishing fifth in 31:48.68.

Cheyenne Peebles was an All-America for Monterey Peninsula College in the javelin, as the Coast Conference champion uncorked a throw of 120-2 to finish third.

Julian Bishop set another personal best in the pole vault, clearing 14-3 1/4 to finish fifth.

College baseball

CSUMB's season came to an end at the NCAA Division II West Regionals, as it was outslugged 12-9 by Azusa Pacific in the title game.

The California Collegiate Athletic League champion Otters, whose 38 wins are the thirdmost in school history, had won the first two games of the regionals, having beaten Azusa Pacific in the second game.

But the host Cougars came from behind to post a 6-5 win in the nightcap Friday, forcing a third and final game between the two powers.

Jason Ajamian had a series for the ages, hitting five homers and driving in 14 runs in four games for CSUMB. He belted a pair in the finale, driving in six of the Otters' nine runs.

West Region and CCAA Player of the Year Brady Miguel added two hits and scored a pair, while Kyle Guerra and Nico Hartojo each had two hits, with Hartojo belting his second homer of the tournament.
