The county's top female performers
Here's a look at who turned out to be the top female high school athletes in the county.
ADDISON AMARAL, NOTRE DAME >> A member of The Herald's All-County volleyball and softball teams, the junior has already committed to play softball at the University of Notre Dame.
Amaral hit .425 for the Gabilan Division champion Spirits with seven homers and 22 runs batted in. She had 31 hits in 25 games, scored 22 runs and finished with a .508 on-base percentage.
Amaral led the Spirits to an undefeated Mission Division season in volleyball, compiling over 200 kills in just 16 matches.
The 5-foot-8 outside hitter also led Notre Dame in service aces and serving percentage and provided a spark in the back row on defense.
BROOKE CANNON, SALINAS >> One of two players to earn all-county honors in two sports, Cannon was the lifeline of the Cowboys' volleyball program with her defense.
The Gabilan Division's Defensive Player of the Year, the libero compiled over 300 digs as Salinas swept 27 of its school-tying 29 wins. She also served 155 points, including 17 in one threeset match.
A defensive wizard on the basketball court for the Cowboys, Cannon often found herself covering the opponent's top ball handlers, finishing among the team leaders in steals.
Cannon was a distributor on offense, averaging just over four assists a game while dropping in 10.8 points a contest.
RHEA COSAND, STEVENSON >> Taking her talents to UC Davis to play lacrosse next year, Cosand was the Gabilan Division's Most Valuable Player, leading Stevenson in goals and points.
Cosand added another MVP honor to her resume when she was chosen the Mission Division's Most Valuable Player in basketball.
A member of The Herald's All-County basketball team, the senior led the Pirates to a league title, averaging just under 17 points a game.
Cosand also pulled down 160 rebounds, compiled 58 assists and recorded 55 steals, finishing among the county leaders in field goals with 90.
Cosand earned all-league honors in field hockey, finishing among the team leaders in goals and points. LINDA ORNELAS, GREENFIELD >> Not only did Ornelas lead the Bruin's volleyball, basketball and softball teams to their firstever league titles, but she was all-league in all three sports.
The senior was the Santa Lucia Division's Most Valuable Player in basketball and the defensive player of the year in volleyball and softball.
Ornelas compiled nearly 400 assists in leading the volleyball team to a schoolrecord 17 wins while taking the basketball team on a school-record 12-game winning streak by leading them in scoring.
The multi-sport standout was 6-2 in the pitching circle while producing 54 hits and six homers at the plate, leading the team in doubles with 19 — propelling the Bruins to their first postseason appearance.
JENIKA ZURITA, SALINAS >> Dazzling college recruiters, Zurita averaged nearly 23 points a game this past season for the Cowboys, taking them to the playoffs and earning a scholarship to the College of Idaho.
A four-year starter, the sharpshooting floor leader also led the team in steals at 4.1 and assists at 4.1, and pulled down over three rebounds a night.
Zurita was the fastest sprinter for Salinas on the track, clocking 12.97seconds in the 100 meters at the Gabilan Division finals. She ran a leg on Salinas' CCS qualifying and Gabilan Division runnerup 400 relay team and produced points in the 200.
