Hospital CEO resigns; retired ex-president returns
The chief executive officer of Mclaren-central Michigan resigned Wednesday morning, and the man who ran the hospital before him came out of retirement to take the helm in the interim.
Marty Tursky, hired in 2018 as president and CEO of the hospital, resigned, “to pursue opportunities with a larger organization closer to home, allowing him more time to spend with family,” said Mclaren-central Michigan spokeswoman Rachel Blizzard in a text message.
Taking the helm on an interim basis will be Bill Lawrence, whom Tursky was hired to replace. Lawrence retired after running the hospital for 10 years.
Under Tursky’s leadership, the hospital had received several quality of care awards. He was hired after a nationwide search.
Before coming to Mclaren-central Michigan, Tursky had worked in hospital and health system operations for 20 years, and was credited with building high-performance teams, a commitment to clinical excellence, financial discipline and bottom-line results.
Lawrence came to Mt. Pleasant with a track record of turning around poorly performing hospitals, and during his tenure was credited with leading the hospital through challenging years. In 2017, Mclarencentral Michigan was recognized for achieving outstanding outcomes in quality, patient safety and patient satisfaction.
His leadership is also credited for having built the foundation for Isabella Citizens for Health, Inc., a healthcare provider that started as a free clinic one night a month and has since expanded into a new location offering what is described as care through a holistic approach. ICH was also the first Mt. Pleasant health care provider to provide drive-thru testing for COVID-19.
It was while Lawrence was president and CEO that what was Central Michigan Community Hospital merged with the Mclaren health network and became Mclaren-central Michigan. The merger was finalized in 2012.
