Talented SHA looks to returnto topofmsac

They have a history, a reallygood history.

Yet, considerin­g it’s a new season, their recent history really doesn’t amount to too much because what’s important is the here and now as in the present.

Since 2013 no mid-michigan volleyball program has had more success than Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Academy.

Between 2013 and 2018 head coach Krista Davis led the Irish to six-straight Mid- State Activities Conference crowns en route to six-straight appearance­s in the Division 4 or Class D quarterfin­als.

Historical­ly speaking, it’s one of the best runs of any volleyball programinm­id-michigan history.

However, in 2019, the Irish found themselves on the outside looking in as they finished runner-up in the MSAC behind Merrill, which also promptly bounced them in districts.

In 2020 SHA is aiming to get back to where it belongs though, which is back atop THEMSAC.

On Tuesday night Davis and company improved to 4-2 overall and to 2- 0 in MSAC action as they swept visitingmo­ntabella in straight sets by scores 25-22, 258, 25-5.

“We have a lot of height and a lot of power at the net this season,” saiddavis Tuesday evening.

“Last year we were scrappy, with a lot of utility players. But we didn’t have a lot of players who could put the ball away. Now we do.”

On paper the Irish have the luxury of having a ton of height this season, led by the likes of juniormadd­iemunley, junior Laura Goenner and sophomores Angel Brown and Lillie Laney.

Moreover, four-year- starting setter Allison Hauck returns this season and is one of the best setters inthe state. Adding to the optimism is the fact that the Irish return five seniors with experience in Hauck, Emma Stempky, Isabelle Fritz, Rosiemalon­ey and Aysia Smith.
