It comes down to how one handles pressure.
Does one buckle under the density and immensity of it all or does one excel and produce a diamond?
On Wednesday afternoon from Alma Middle School the Alma High School boys soccer program pressed and pressed Baycity Johnglennfor thebetter part of the second half and eventually broke the Bobcats in the waningminutes.
As it was junior star Connor Lemerand scored from the top of the box with 7:25 left in regulation to lift the Panthers to a 1-0 Tri-valley Conference. With it tthe she Panthers improve to 4-2 overall and to 2-1 in TVC action heading into Monday’s showdown at Frankenmuth.
For the game Lemerand had numerous scoring opportunities, yet hewaited until the closing minutes to find the twine.
“We had a few more moments in the second halfwhere wewere attacking the goal,” said
Alma coachnicko’neill following the festivities. “The urgency we played with was nice to see in the second half because it wasn’t there in the first (half).”
Neither teamdidmuchinthe opening 40 minutes outside of Alma hitting a post about halfway through.
In the second half the Panthers really started to apply the pressure on the offensive end though and it finally paid off.
With the win the Panthers keep the pace in the TVC heading into Monday’s hugely-important road game at Frankenmuth. Onpaperalma, Freeland, Frankenmuth and EssexvilleGarber could all make a run at the conference title, thus every game is super important.
Domprince got credit for the shutout in net for the Panthers as he turned aside several shots.
