Program bringing degrees to frontline workers
Mid Michigan supports Futures for Frontliners initiative to provide tuition-free college
Mid Michigan College announced that it will serve as a Frontliners Champion to support the Futures for Frontliners program unveiled today by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
“We believe strongly that those who worked during the state shutdown this past spring so that the rest of us could stay safe are heroes and deserve our thanks,” explained Tim Hood, Mid Michigan College President. “Providing these frontline workers in essential industries with access to tuition-free community college to pursue their career and personal goals is a wonderful way to say ‘ thank you’ – they certainly earned it.”
Futures for Frontliners offers Michiganders who live in a community college’s district, worked in essential industries April 1-June 30, and do not have a college degree access to free community college tuition. In- district tuition costs are fully covered for all Michigan frontliners, but there may be out- of-pocket costs to cover the remaining out- district tuition.
Currently, Mid Michigan College’s in- district area includes residents in the Clare- Gladwin RESD. Individuals living in the Gratiot-isabella RESD district will vote on November 3rd on two annexation proposals that could add this geography to the College’s in- district service area. If the ballot proposals pass, free tuition for frontliners would extend to those living in this area.
Those without a high school diploma or equivalency are eligible for services to help them prepare for and complete this credential and go on to a community college or job training program.
The application period runs through December 31 of this year, and prospective students can
begin attending in January of 2021. To apply and learn more about Futures for Frontliners:
