Union Township experiencedawatermainbreakon Lincoln Road north of Pickard Road. According to a press release fromUnion Township, the break resulted in a loss of pressure in the Charter Township of Union Water System in the area. Once water service is restored, residents will be required to boil water before using. Bacterial contamination may occur in the water system. Residents and businesses, including food establishments, in the following areas are affected: • Lincoln Road north of Pickard • McDonald Drive • Scully Subdivision • River Road west and east of Lincoln • Crawford Road • Bamber Road between Pickard Road and River Road • O’Connor Drive Subdivision • Sunfield Estates Subdivision • Fox Meadows Subdivision • Deer Run Subdivision • Craighill Road •Mission Road north and south of E. River Road • River Road east of Mission Road to US127 Bacteria are common throughout the environment and are not generally harmful. However, whenever a water system loses pressure for any significant length of time, precautionary measures are recommended. It is suggested that residents not drink or serve water without boiling it first. Bring all water to a boil and let it boil for five minutes, then let it cool before using, or use bottledwater. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in thewater. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, coffee, pop or other beverages, and preparing food until further notice.

Food establishment operators should follow the instructions in the “Emergency Action Plans for Retail Food Establishments” guide. This document is available on the Michigan Department of Agriculture Web site at michigan.gov/ michiganprepares. Instructions are available in English, Spanish, Arabic, and Chinese.

Water staff will take remedial actions such as flushing and collecting bacteriological samples from the system to determine when the water meets the state drinking water standards. It’s estimated the problem will be resolved by Saturday, Oct. 10.

The boil water notice remains in effect until results fromthe sampling verify the water is safe to drink.

A map outlining the boil water area will be available at uniontownshipmi.com. Also, another notice will be issued when the boil water advisory has been lifted and posted on the Union Township website.
