Climate summit to be held Friday
The Central Michigan Climate Solutions Summit, sponsored by Centralmichigan University and Mt. Pleasant Citizens’ Climate Education, will be held on Friday, Oct. 16.
According to a press release frommt. Pleasant Citizens’ Climate Education, the first university-community collaboration on solutions to climate change is a free, online conference that will run from 8:50 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It will highlight solutions that are being implemented at Centralmichigan University and in the local community in order to expand local engagement in solving climate change and building resilience to its impacts.
Dr. Andrew Hoffman, the Holcim (US) Professor of Sustainable Enterprise in the Ross School of Business and the School of Sustainability and Environment at the University of Michigan will be the keynote speaker. His topic is “Solutions to Climate Change inourculture and the Market.”
Dr. Hoffman has an international reputation as a scholar concerned with the market, society, and climate change. His most recent book is Flourishing: A Frank Conversation About Sustainability.
Dr. Bob Davies, President of CMU; Jay Kahn, Director of Facilities Operations, Facilities Management at CMU; Dr. Goksel Demirer, Professor of Environmental Engineering, School of Engineering and Technology, and Institute for Great Lakes Research; and Chloe Majeske, CMU student majoring in meteorology will describe how the University is addressing solutions to climate change.
Mt. Pleasant Mayor Will Joseph and City Manager Nancy Ridley; Dr. James Hageman, Co-founder of Trees NOW Isabella; Emily Zoet, Volunteer with Mt. Pleasant Citizens’ Climate Lobby/education; and Laura Coffee, Marketing & Owner Services Manager, Greentree Cooperative Grocery will discuss their respective policies, projects, and practices to address climate change.
The summit will include short videos from some of the groups planning to share information when the summit was scheduled to be held on campus in March.
The Central Michigan Climate Solutions Summit was organized by interested faculty and students at CMU in collaboration with the Mount Pleasant Chapter of Citizens Climate Education. The Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences; the College of Science and Engineering; and the Institute for Great Lakes Research are university sponsors.
