Ex-con back in jail after driving violations, drugs
Police also find knives in traffic stop
An ex-con with multiple license suspensions was stopped by a Mt. Pleasant police officer Sunday and arrested for driving with no license, no insurance, no plates on his car and drug possession, among other things.
An officer was patrolling in the area of Isabella and Broadway that afternoon when he saw the car, with a missing headlight and a donut tire, pull into a party store.
After arresting him on the driving offenses, the officer found multiple drug paraphernalia and knives, along with spent ammunition, which he was forbidden from owning due to prior convictions.
Gary Shimmell, 46, has prior convictions for operating under the influence of a controlled substance in 2008 in Montcalm County and operating a drug lab in Clare County in 2018.
He violated his probation in the first case, and was discharged without improvement on the second, according to state records.
In the latest arrest, the officer found several knives, an assorted variety of ammunition and
drug paraphernalia with traces of methamphetamine both inside the car in the trunk.
Confiscated were:
• Two knives found on Shimmel, a dagger from the center console, a mechanical knife from a backpack and a hunting knife from the glove box.
• Seven rounds of used ammunition.
• A blue dish, set of digital scales and two glass pipes, all of which tested positive for meth.
• Straws, two more digital scales and a pipe in the trunk that also tested psotive for meth.
Shimmel was arraigned on multiple charges in Isabella County District Court on Monday and faces further court hearings March 11 and 18 before Judge Sara Spencernoggle.
