One of the ballyhooed numbers pointing to the severity of the yearlong coronavirus pandemic recently is that more people nationally have died from the virus than soldiers who died in World War II.

A closer look at Michigan reveals numbers just as grim.

More than 15,600 people in Michigan have died from the virus since the pandemic began a year ago.

To put that in perspective:

All but 121 of Michigan’s 1,275 cities, villages and townships have populations greater than the number of people who have died from the virus..the number of deaths is equivalent to wiping out the population of a mediumsized city.

The number of dead from the virus in Michigan is greater than the combined number of Michiganders who died in World War II, 3,555, in Vietnam, 2,651, and World War I, 5,000.

The number of dead from the virus in Michigan is greater than the 14,753 Michigan soldiers killed in the American Civil War, 1861-65.

Roughly one in 16 Michigan residents has had coronavirus.

Roughly one in 650 Michigan residents have died from the virus.
