Jenna Dove makes Vestaburg history
Senior becomes program’s first member of the 1,000-point club
Numero uno.
No. 1.
Best ever.
Head of the class.
All the aforementioned have a nice ring and that ring rings true.
On Monday night Vestaburg High School senior Jenna Dove became the first girls basketball player in program history to reach 1,000-career points as she led the Wolverines to a 35-22 home victory over Carson Citycrystal.
Dove, a 5-foot-8 post player, started the week 18 points shy of 1,000. She finished with 19 Monday.
“I have worked so hard to get here, I feel like I’ve hit my moment,” said Dove, who’s been playing basketball since the fourth grade. “People were asking me how many (points) I had, so I knew I was close. When I finally hit (1,000 points) I was shocked and excited.”
As a four-year starter for the Wolverines Dove has seen her scoring average improve every season. As a freshman she averaged around nine points per game. Same as a sophomore.
Last year Dove averaged 13 points per contest. This season she’s averaging 21 points, a number that head coach Matt Koutz attributes to hard work.
“She was not a 3-point threat last year, now she is,” said Koutz of his senior captain. “She has spent countless hours working on her game and is the hardest-working player I have ever coached.”
Moreover, Dove also carries a 4.0 GPA because she’s a hard worker in the classroom.
She plans on attending CMU this fall and studying exercise science.
Dove is also the third mid-michigan player to reach the 1,000 career points milestone in the last week as Alma’s Alyssa Leister and Mt. Pleasant’s Mackenzie Egger did so last week.
