Scots play first football game in nearly 500 days

The Alma College football team hosted Adrian College for its first game in 490 days at Bahlke Field on Saturday. Joey Fosmore made his first career start at quarterbac­k for the Scots. The sophomore threw for 134 yards and ran for 22 yards. Nathan Goralski led the team with 43 yards. Elijah Jackson made three receptions for 45 yards On the defensive side, Odin Soffredine had a game-high 13 tackles and a forced fumble. Ryan Nadlicki made 10 tackles and had two sacks. Zach Clements went 2-of-2 on field goal attempts as the Scots fell 21-6 to the Bulldogs.

• Softball Sweeps Defiance in Home Opener: The Alma College softball team hosted Defiance College on Saturday for its first home games of the season. The Scots won by a shutout, 6-0, and then won in walk-off fashion, 5-4. Haley Ullrich picthed a complete game shutout allowing only three hits while earning 12 strikeouts. In game two, Jessica Eva had the walk off hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game for the Scots. Ullrich and Emma Fraser both earned MIAA Athlete of the Week awards back on Monday, March 15th.

• Bowling Takes Second at Conference Tournament: The Alma College bowling team earned a second-place finish at the third American Heartland Tournament of the season at the Southwyck Lanes. The Scots had three bowlers finish in the top of the individual leaderboar­d. Overall,

Alma had a team score of 5,680. Rachel Kuczajda took home fifth with an average score of 192.75.

The junior scored over 200 in half of her games with a high game of 210. Kasidey Easlick posted an average score of 187 to earn seventh place.

The Gladwin native hit the 200 mark on half of her games with a high game of 220. Kemmie Shunk finished 10th with an average score of 186.

The junior also had two games in the 200s with a high game of 211.

• Baseball Splits Pair of Games in Indiana: The Alma College baseball team traveled to Westfield, Indiana to face Hope College and Olivet College.

In the game against

Hope, the Scots fell 11-3.

In the game against Olivet, the Scots won in walk-off fashion by a score of 8-7 with Zach Schirmer playing the hero with the walk off hit. Schirmer and Kevin Tuttle each had three hits in the game.

• Women’s Soccer Goes Toe-to-toe with Adrian: The Alma College women’s soccer team hosted Adrian College on Thursday for its first game of the season. The Scots took on the defending conference champions and gave them all they could handle as they played a 0-0 scoreless game up until the final minutes.

Ally Wentworth stood on her head making seven saves while the Alma offense created some good chances throughout the game.

In the end, Adrian came away with a 1-0 win.

• Volleyball Starts Season at Hope: The Alma College volleyball team started its season at Hope College on Friday and lost three sets to none. The Scots played tough to the very end as they only lost the final set by a score of 25-22. Rachael Parrett led the team with 11 kills. Bailey Cantrell led the Scots in digs with 16 total as well as earning three assists. Haley Novak led the team in assists with 11.

• Men’s Soccer Kicks off Season at Trine: The Alma College men’s soccer teams started its season on Friday at Trine University. Jose Vicario played all 90 minutes in net for Alma. Jarod Arendsen had two shots and one that went on goal for the Scots in their defeat.

• Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Adrian: The Alma College women’s lacrosse team traveled to Adrian College on Saturday and ended up coming up short to the Bulldogs. Rileigh Mcgeorge led the Scots in goals tonight netting three. Sam Peterson and Andrea Wickman each scored a goal for Alma. Sophmore Johnna Pullen, Freshmen Jamie Sherman, and Lauren Kenny led in assists.

• Men’s Lacrosse Gets Dropped by Calvin: The Alma College men’s lacrosse team loss at Bahlke Field Saturday night to the Calvin University Knights Ezra Leppanen scored the first goal of the day for the Scots on a man-up advantage that was assisted by Trevor Bailey. Leppanen would score again to open up the second half. Byron Weber netted the other Alma goal with Haden Johnson earning the assist. Connor Gilbert picked up a team-high five ground balls. Joey Allen and Paul Heuschele each picked up four ground balls. Gilbert won 9-of-12 faceoffs while Weber won all four of his face offs.

• Men’s and Women’s Tennis Get Beaten By Kalamazoo: The Alma College men’s and women’s tennis teams travled to Kalamazoo College on Saturday and both came up short. In doubles action on the women’s side, Brooke Butterfiel­d and Abigail Davenport dropped a close match 8-6. Davenport also received MIAA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week back on Monday, March 15th.
