Breckenrid­ge, Farwell and Clare all fall in district finals

MERRILL >> The Breckenrid­ge girls basketball team closed the season out Friday in Division 3 district action from Merrill High School.

The Huskies fell in the D3 district finale to the host Vandals by a final of 39-25.

Breckenrid­ge ends the season with a record of 8-9. Merrill improves to 13-5 and advances to Monday’s D3 regional from Grandville Calvin Christian. It will play Grand Rapids Covenant at 5:30 p.m.

Summer Smith led the Huskies with 10 points, seven boards and two assists while Kara Whiting added in 12 caroms. Alivia Cross also had eight points and nine boards.

Beaverton 34, Farwell 23

Oh, so close.

On Friday night from

Harrison High School the Farwell girls basketball program was looking to win its first district title since the early-1990s and the Eagles came ever-so close.

Tied at 20-20 entering the fourth Farwell went cold from the field in the first four minutes of the fourth while Beaverton went on a 6-0 run. This run proved to be the difference in the contest as the Beavers claimed the D3 district title with a 3423 victory.

Farwell closes the season at 8-5 while Beaverton improves to 15-1 and advances into Monday’s D3 regional round. It will play Hart (14-1) at 5 p.m. Monday from Maple City Glen Lake High School.

Madison Travis had a double-double for Farwell with 11 points and 12 rebounds while Anna Pitts had five points and eight boards. Raini Sponseller also had three points and four boards.

DIVISION 2

Standish Sterling 61, Clare 36

BIG RAPIDS >> Clare’s girls basketball team closed the 2021 docket out Friday in Division 2 districts from Big Rapids High School.

The Pioneers fell to Standish Sterling in the D2 district final by a final of 61-36.

Clare ends the season with a record of 11-4.

Bailey Taylor led the Pioneers with 11 points while Megan Gross and Izzy Jones both had eight points apiece. Sofiah Coker also had five points for Clare.

Standish Sterling (164) advances to the D2 regionals at Houghton Lake High School Monday. It will play Ludington at 7 p.m.
