Alma Elks Lodge to again host ‘Field of Honor’

- By Greg Nelson

Last year, for the first time since 2005, Alma Elks Lodge #1400 was forced to cancel its annual “Field of Honor” due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021, however, members are planning on having the event on schedule even though some restrictions may still apply.

It’s set for 2 p.m. Sunday, May 2 at the lodge, located at 610 W. Warwick Drive.

Each year the Elks sell American flags for $25 that are then placed on the club’s ground in honor or in memory of a loved one or special friend who has touched their lives. The person doesn’t have to be a U.S. military veteran.

In fact, the 2021 event will honor first responders, doctors, nurses, dispatchers, EMS personnel, firefighters and police officers.

“These dedicated people are always appreciated for what they do to help our communities, but last year they were challenged to a greater degree than usual,” Elks member and one of the event’s organizers Randy Boudreau said. “The heightened (pandemic) risk increased the anxiety for them to complete the task at hand. They endured this to assist our loved ones in getting help and treatments they so desperately needed. Our entire community should applaud their efforts in thanking them for all they accomplished.”

Flags, which include a pole and nametag, can be

purchased until April 16.

“Hopefully this display will give hope for the future and create a sight that will inspire the community to realize that Americanism is still alive in our community,” Boudreau said.

Gathering restrictions, whatever they might be at the time of the event, along with mask and social distancing protocols, will be observed. Since it takes place outside those should be less of a problem.

The Field of Honor ceremony normally includes honoring all branches of the U.S. armed forces, as well as MIA/POW’S.

It also features the Forgotten Eagles motorcycle club, guest speakers and a 21-gun salute offered by VFW and American Legion color guards.

If COVID-19 restrictions permit, each person who purchases a flag can place it in the field themselves during the ceremony or designate someone else to do it for them.

“We believe this is a great way to be involved with our community and remain safe,” Boudreau said.

Normally, more than 200 flags are sold for the event.

They remain in place until Flag Day on June 14. After that, those who bought a flag can pick them up at the lodge.

Also, anyone who purchased a flag in 2020 and didn’t get to use it because of the cancellation can place it this year, Boudreau noted.

“If you haven’t had a chance to attend this ceremony please try to attend for an emotional experience that will lift your spirit and leave you with a true feeling of patriotism,” he added.

Flag order forms are available at the Elks Lodge or by calling 989463-1400 or Boudreau at 989-506-6332. He can also be reached by email at rand1b.@yahoo.com
