Isabella County saw a one-day increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases of 57 on Friday, a number not seen since November. Central Michigan University also saw a large single-day spike in cases on Thursday.

CMU reported an additional 27 cases in Thursday’s entry of its COVID-19 dashboard. It increased the university’s seven-day average to 9.71. That average is a raw number of cases.

Friday’s report of an additional 57 confirmed cases of the disease in Isabella County brings the county’s cumulative total to 3,972. No new deaths were reported Friday, and that number remains at 76.

The degree to which the two numbers are related is not knowable, due to how cases are reported. However, confirmed cases both in Isabella County and at the university have been on distinct upward trend for the last month.

Isabella County’s seven-day average of con

firmed and probable cases per 100,000 people at a county-level dashboard hosted by the Brown University School of Public Health increased to 36.2 based on Wednesday’s data. Isabella, Gratiot and Clare counties are now within the category for the highest risk of spread on that dashboard.

The state’s average over the same time is 56.7, the highest in the nation.

Isabella County’s sevenday rolling average in the rate of positive diagnostic test results is 9.92 percent based on Thursday’s data. The higher the percentage of diagnostic tests that return a positive result, the more rapidly the disease is believed to be spreading.

Michigan’s average over the same time is 14.26 percent.

Gratiot and Clare counties have lower spread metrics than both Isabella County and the state as a whole.

Gratiot’s seven-day average of new confirmed and probable cases per 100,000 people is 36.8 and its seven-day rate of positive diagnostic tests is 7.75 percent. Clare’s seven-day average of new confirmed and probable cases per 100,000 people is 31.8 and its seven-day rate of positive diagnostic tests is 9.51 percent.

Both counties also combined for less than half the number of Isabella County’s new confirmed cases.

Gratiot County had an additional 19 cases for a cumulative total of 2,595, with 101 deaths. Clare County had an additional eight cases for a cumulative total of 1,504, with 68 deaths.
