- By Greg Nelson

The Healthy Pine River group is joining forces with two other local businesses to conduct an Earth Day metal recycling fundraiser.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 22 in the Alma Public Library parking lot at 500 E. Superior St.

Padnos Central Michigan, which operates a recycling center in Alma, will be on hand to collect all types of donated metal with the proceeds going to Health Pine River.

Radio Station WMLM 1520 AM will also be broadcasting from the site and registering participants for a chance to win two free tickets to see Miranda Lambert and special guest Lee Bruce in concert at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort on July 24.

All types of metal will be ac

cepted including iron, steel, copper, tin, and old appliances, among others.

Large items, such as cars, tractors or other vehicles, can be dropped off at Padnos’ recycling center at 1430 Williams St. in Alma.

Anyone who needs help getting items to the fundraiser can call 989-3303686 for assistance.

The event will offer residents a chance to do a little spring cleaning while benefiting the environment.

Healthy Pine River is a local grassroots organization that is working to improve the river’s water quality by removing harmful bacteria, agricultural

nutrients, invasive species, and human-caused sandbars and land formations from the waterway.

The group partners with the cities of Alma and St.

Louis, Mid-michigan District Health Department, Gratiot County Parks and Recreation and Conservation District, as well as Michigan Department of Environment Great Lakes and Energy and others on various cleanup projects.

Healthy Pine River also hosts monthly meetings as well as community informational forums to keep the public updated on what’s happening regarding the river.
